Acworth : Georgia

Filed under:

Acworth is a city located in Cobb County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 13,422. Census estimates of 2003 indicate a very rapidly increasing population of 17,434.

Unincorporated areas considered Acworth for mailing purposes also extend into southeast Bartow County and southwest Cherokee County. Oddly, an area which is by far closest to Woodstock, and is on the exact opposite side of Kennesaw from Acworth, is also wrongly considered “Acworth” by the USPS.

Incorporated in 1840 on December 1, the town was named by Western & Atlantic Railroad engineer Joseph L. Gregg in 1843 for his hometown of Acworth, New Hampshire, which was in turn named for English nobleman Lord Acworth. Its original name was Northcutt Station, after the first railroad station master Alfred Northcutt.

Acworth Beach is located on nearby Lake Allatoona.

Athens : Georgia

Filed under:

Athens or Athens-Clarke County is a city located in Clarke County,Georgia, U.S., in the northeastern part of the state, just off of Georgia 316. As of the 2000 census, the consolidated city-county (including all unincorporated areas in Clarke County except Winterville) had a total population of 100,266, although this does not include all of the college students with temporary residences. It is home to the University of Georgia, a major educational institution in the South and a football powerhouse in the Southeastern Conference. The city was particularly known for its music scene in the 1980s, being home to such bands as R.E.M., The B-52’s, and Widespread Panic.

History

In the late 18th century, a trading settlement on the banks of the Oconee River called Cedar Shoals stood where Athens is located today. On January 27, 1785, the Georgia General Assembly granted a charter by Abraham Baldwin for the University of Georgia as the first state-supported university. Sixteen years later, in 1801, a committee from the university’s board of trustees selected a site for the university on a hill above Cedar Shoals in what was then Jackson County. On July 25, John Milledge, one of the trustees and later governor of Georgia, bought 633 acres (2.6 km&sup2) from Daniel Easley and donated it to the university. Milledge named the surrounding area Athens after the city that was home to the academy of Plato and Aristotle in ancient Greece.

The first building built was named Franklin College in honor of Ben Franklin and is now called Old College. The town grew as lots adjacent to the college were sold to raise money for the additional construction of the school. By by the time first class graduated from the University in 1804, Athens consisted of three homes, three stores and a few other buildings facing Front Street, now known as Broad Street.
