Aspen : Colorado

Filed under:

Aspen, Colorado is now a Colorado ski resort and cultural center, named because of the abundance of aspen trees in the area. It was historically a silver mining center.

Aspen is the county seat of Pitkin County and lies on the Roaring Fork River, a tributary of the Colorado River about 40 miles south of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. It sits in the Roaring Fork Valley, surrounded by mountains on three sides: Red Mountain to the north, Smuggler Mountain to the east, and Aspen Mountain to the south.

Though the surroundings are awesome, and skiing is supposed to be great here, this is a town for the rich. So if you’re not, or just don’t look rich, be prepared for people trying to stare you out of town. Hospitality was not invented in Aspen. In fact, I don’t think anything was ever invented in Aspen, and nothing ever will.

Silver was first discovered by prospectors from Leadville, Colorado in 1879 after a treaty with the Ute tribe opened up the Western Slope of Colorado to entry. Because of difficult access mining development was slow but in 1877 the railroad was extended to Aspen and it grew to a population of 12,000 and 9 million dollars of silver bullion was mined at the height of the boom in 1892.

Aurora : Colorado

Filed under:

Aurora is a city located in Arapahoe County, Colorado with small sections in neighboring Adams County and Douglas County. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 276,900.

Historically, Aurora began as a small farming community on the plains east of Denver.

Although Aurora has long been considered by many in Colorado as one of Denver’s larger suburbs, its growing population in recent decades (now over half the size of Denver proper) has led to efforts by some of citizens to be recognized as co-equal with its larger neighbor. A former mayor once expressed the somewhat whimsical notion that eventually the area would be called the “Aurora Metropolitan Area.” It is widely recognized, however, that such an effort is somewhat hampered by the lack of a large historically important central business district to the city, which is highly surburban in character.

Aurora is the location of the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, and is the birthplace of 2004 Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry.

Boulder : Colorado

Boulder is as beautiful as it is unique. Visitors here are treated to both a sensory and cultural treat. We have 4 very distinct seasons, with a moderate to cold winter. The Boulderites motto is “if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes and it’ll change". The moral: Always carry a jacket.

Snug against the dramatic Flatirons of the Rocky Mountains, the view is breathtaking from most anywhere in town. Boulder is one of the few cities to be literally right up against the mountains, which helps create the environment. The founding fathers also sought to preserve this beauty by surrounding the city with parks and open space, so the Denver metroplex will never encroach, as it has on neighboring towns.
