Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 17.0 km˛ (6.6 mi˛). 16.0 km˛ (6.2 mi˛) of it is land and 1.0 km˛ (0.4 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 6.09% water. Highlands is located on the banks of the San Jacinto River and the Houston Ship Channel. The majority of the land in Highlands is on a high river bank. Highlands also contains the Lynchburg Ferry.

The racial makeup of the CDP is 90.18% White, 1.61% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 5.28% from other races, and 2.00% from two or more races. 13.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
