Tryon was the birthplace of the singer, pianist and composer Nina Simone.

When counties were established in New York State in 1683, the present Lewis County was part of Albany County. This was an enormous county, including the northern part of New York State as well as all of the present State of Vermont and, in theory, extending westward to the Pacific Ocean. Long Beach, North Carolina was a coastal resort incorporated as a town in 1955 in Brunswick County, North Carolina. It is most famous for the total devastation it sustained during Hurricane Hazel in 1954; only five buildings survived the storm. It merged with neighboring Yaupon Beach in 1999 to form the town of Oak Island.
