Boulder : Utah

Boulder is a town located in Garfield County, Utah, 30 miles northeast of Escalante on Utah Scenic Byway 12. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 180, a modest increase over the 1990 figure of 126.

Boulder, quite isolated until the Civilian Conservation Corps built a road from Escalante, did not get electric power until 1947.

Geography
Boulder is located at 37°55′28″ North, 111°25′34″ West (37.924329, -111.426240)1, near Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and Capitol Reef National Park.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 54.2 km˛ (20.9 mi˛), none of which is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 180 people, 65 households, and 41 families residing in the town. The population density is 3.3/km˛ (8.6/mi˛). There are 102 housing units at an average density of 1.9/km˛ (4.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 96.67% White, 1.11% Asian, 0% African American, 0% Native American, 0% Pacific Islander, 0% from other races, and 2.22% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Boulder City was originally built by the Bureau of Reclamation as housing for workers who were building Hoover Dam. Alcohol sales and all forms of gambling were prohibited in the city.
