Brutus is a town located in Cayuga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,777.
The Town of Brutus is located in the east part of the county. It is west of Syracuse, New York.
History
The Town of Brutus was incorporated in 1802 from the Town of Aurelius. See also Central New York Military Tract.
Geography
The east town line is the border of Onondaga County, New York, and the north town line is defined by the Erie Canal. The New York State Thruway passes across the town.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 58.3 km˛ (22.5 mi˛). 57.3 km˛ (22.1 mi˛) of it is land and 0.9 km˛ (0.4 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.60% water.
Demographics
The town claims to be the most populous in the county.
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,777 people, 1,793 households, and 1,296 families residing in the town. The population density is 83.3/km˛ (215.8/mi˛). There are 1,956 housing units at an average density of 34.1/km˛ (88.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.74% White, 0.36% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
