Cumberland is a town located in Providence County, Rhode Island, incorporated in 1746. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 31,840.

Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 73.2 km˛ (28.2 mi˛). 69.4 km˛ (26.8 mi˛) of it is land and 3.8 km˛ (1.5 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 5.17% water.

The rare mineral Cumberlandite is found in this area and was used as a source of iron for cannons in the colonial era. A major geologic feature of the area is Diamond Hill, a massive outcropping of white quartz, which was once a ski area and is now a town park.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 31,840 people, 12,198 households, and 9,038 families residing in the town. The population density is 458.9/km˛ (1,188.4/mi˛). There are 12,572 housing units at an average density of 181.2/km˛ (469.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 96.74% White, 0.57% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.84% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 2.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
