Keene is a town located in Essex County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,063.
The Town of Keene is in the eastern part of the county.
History
Early settlers began arriving around 1797. The Town of Keene was formed in 1808 from parts of Elizabethtown and Jay.
Geography
Many of the High Peaks of the Adirondack State Park are in or near the town, including Mount Marcy, the highest elevation in New York. The source of the Hudson River is near Mount Marcy.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 405.6 km˛ (156.6 mi˛). 404.2 km˛ (156.1 mi˛) of it is land and 1.5 km˛ (0.6 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.37% water.
