History
The town was formed in 1823 from part of the Town of Louisville.

The Raquette River flows through part of the town.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 149.5 km˛ (57.7 mi˛). 147.4 km˛ (56.9 mi˛) of it is land and 2.2 km˛ (0.9 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.47% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,565 people, 1,803 households, and 1,280 families residing in the town. The population density is 31.0/km˛ (80.2/mi˛). There are 1,959 housing units at an average density of 13.3/km˛ (34.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.06% White, 0.42% Black or African American, 1.07% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The name "Norfolk" is traditionally pronounced "Norfork" by Nebraskans. When the city was founded (as a village) in 1881, it was named after the "north fork" of the Elkhorn River, but abbreviated as "Norfork". The United States Postal Service, however, thought that "Norfork" was a mistake and changed the name to "Norfolk". This became the official spelling, but the local pronunciation did not change.
