Ontario is a town located in Wayne County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 9,778.
The Town of Ontario is located in the northwest corner of the county.
History
The first settler arrived in 1806. The Town of Ontario was created in 1807 as the “Town of Freetown” from a part of the Town of Williamson. In 1808 the town name changed to Ontario.
In 1811 iron ore was discovered and a thriving smelting operation arose that lasted until past the end of the century.
Geography
The north town boundary is Lake Ontario, and the west town line is the border of Monroe County, New York. The town is east of the City of Rochester.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 83.8 km˛ (32.3 mi˛). 83.4 km˛ (32.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.37% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,778 people, 3,617 households, and 2,698 families residing in the town. The population density is 117.2/km˛ (303.5/mi˛). There are 3,814 housing units at an average density of 45.7/km˛ (118.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 96.47% White, 1.25% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 1.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
