Portland is a town located in Chautauqua County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,502.
The Town of Portland, on the shore of Lake Erie, was incorporated in 1813.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 88.8 km˛ (34.3 mi˛). 88.7 km˛ (34.3 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.09% water.
The New York State Thruway crosses the northern part of the town.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,502 people, 1,655 households, and 1,161 families residing in the town. The population density is 62.0/km˛ (160.6/mi˛). There are 2,096 housing units at an average density of 23.6/km˛ (61.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 82.93% White, 12.05% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.02% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.51% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 8.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Vanport was a public housing project located between the contemporary Portland, Oregon city boundary and the Columbia River, contructed in 1943 to house the workers at the wartime shipyards in Portland and Vancouver, Washington. Because it was a federal project, it had no rules barring residence based on race, and was the largest unsegregated community in the state of Oregon at the time.
