Jonesboro is a city located in Clayton County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,829. The city is the county seat of Clayton County6. The city's name was originally spelled Jonesborough, and during the American Civil War the final skirmish in the Atlanta Campaign was fought here south of Atlanta, cutting off the city and forcing the mayor of Atlanta to surrender at Marietta in early September of 1864.
