It is the location of University of Nebraska-Kearney. Kearney is also the location of the Museum of Nebraska Art, home of the state’s official art collection. The city was named after nearby Fort Kearny (sic), a United States Army outpost along the Oregon Trail in the middle 19th century that was itself named after Stephen W. Kearny.
