Tucson sits between the Santa Catalina Mountains rising 9,000 feet to the north, the Rincon Mountains in the east, the Tucson Mountains in the west, the Tortolita Mountains in the northwest and the Santa Rita and Sierrita Mountains in the south. Tucson is home of the Tucson Rodeo, now in it’s 76th year. It also hosts the Tucson Rodeo Parade. Every year, Tucson hosts the Gem and Mineral Show which brings visitors and merchants from all over the world. Tucson is a modern city, yet is still holds on to its Southwestern charm. It is Arizona ’s oldest city, thus its nickname “Old Pueblo". Tucson is the second largest city in the state. The town began a Spanish presidio or military garrison. Because of the almost always clear and relatively dark skies, there are several large telescope installations around southern Arizona operated by several different entities. The largest of them Kitt Peak National Observatory west of Tucson offers some public access.
Tucson is known for its mild winters. The winter low temperature is 40 degrees and the summer high temperature is 99 degrees. The town has a 12-inch annual rainfall. The climate in Tucson is always dry with temperatures ranging from warm to extremely hot. The city normally receives less than 25 cm of rainfall per year. Daytime temperatures can exceed 45 deg. C during the Summer with a much more pleasant 20 - 25 deg. C during the winter months. High tourist season extends from November through March. Fall and Spring are good times to visit this area if you want to avoid the tourist crowds.
