Arizona : Wickenburg
Wickenburg is known as the “Dude Ranch Capital of the World”. Wickenburg still hangs on to its wild west character. Be sure to tour the Desert Caballeros Western Museum, and if you’re a bird watcher, stop by the Hassayampa River Preserve. Nestled in the foothills of the Bradshaw Mountains, and along the banks of the Hassayampa River, Wickenburg boasts a rich history which is still evident today. The town is oldest north of Tucson. In 1863, Henry Wickenburg, a German refugee, discovered the Vulture Mine which in time became the richest gold producing mine in Arizona’s history. In the early 1900s, as the mine played out, ranching and tourism took over as economic mainstays in the area. Today, Wickenburg offers a relaxing Western life style with a full range of private sector services. If you are coming from Flagstaff and would like to take a scenic route to Wickenburg, you will take Highway 89A south out of town. You will pass through Sedona, Cottonwood and into Prescott. Once in Prescott take Highway 89 southwest out of town passing through Peeples Valley. When Highway 89 meets State Highway 93 take it south to Wickenburg.
